Optics
- Athermalization process for mass-produced imaging systems, with no net manufacturing cost increase.
- Camera pose and distortion calibration for single and multi-camera systems at both consumer and industrial levels.
- Design of various laser interferometers for fluid flow measurement.
- Development of ultra-high-precision camera-based 3D point trackers used in flow and strain measurement.
Software
- Full automation of a two-story-tall wind tunnel with camera control, data broadcasting, network remote control, and "cruise control" (speed control feeding back from pitot-static tube) to maintain speeds or Reynolds number over long runs and varying temperatures.
- Practical optimization; corrected customer's PID controller for high-slew-speed telescope mounts and reduced tracking error by 100x; implemented a data structure to speed up point tracking by 1000x.
- Frameworks and tools for esoteric machine learning research.
- "Lab" tools to facilitate optical alignment, mechanical testing, and metrology.
Mechanical / Optomechanical
- Submersible two-component force balance using off-the-shelf load cells, with calibration rig, electronics, and acquisition software for erosion research.
- Various optomechanical bits; from lens mounting to alignment stages to full systems, including an airborne bathymetry LIDAR with stringent stability requirements.
- Wind tunnel models with complex geometry, usually stuffed to the gills with plumbing and/or cabling.
- Fixtures for testing and manufacturing of various components.
